ONDO STATE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (OSCDC)
PROJECT SUMMARY
LOCATION: AKURE, ONDO STATE
DESIGN YEAR: 2023
CLIENT: THE ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT
PROJECT STATUS: DESIGN PROPOSAL
DESIGNED IN MEMORY OF: DR. AMEYO STELLA ADADEVOH
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, one of the core missions behind the founding of CHii Consults was to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s fight against infectious diseases such as smallpox, Ebola, monkeypox, and COVID-19. To support this mission with solid research and design, an academic project was initiated within a tertiary institution. Coincidentally, Valentine Chiamaka Ukpe, the founder and team lead of CHii Consults, had just gained admission and was set to begin studies in 2021.
By 2022, the proposed project was approved as a viable subject for academic research, and the esteemed Dr. Ayoola was appointed as the project supervisor. Within a year, a comprehensive design focused on infectious disease control was developed, using Akure, the capital of Ondo State, as the case study.
The ultimate goal of the project was to produce a prototype facility model that could be adopted and replicated across all states in Nigeria—helping the nation avoid the setbacks experienced during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
DESIGN INFO
The proposed design is a comprehensive Infectious Disease Control Center, conceptualized as a mini campus composed of multiple facilities. It includes four major buildings spread across an expansive open field. The open spaces are intentionally designed to serve as temporary accommodation or emergency setups during outbreaks.
1. Clinical and Diagnostic Center
This is an eight-story facility that functions as the medical backbone of the campus. It houses state-of-the-art hospital equipment and supports testing, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases.
Key features include:
-
Advanced diagnostic laboratories: MRI, CT scan, X-ray, blood labs, and more
-
Outpatient and inpatient wards for patient treatment
-
Specialized treatment areas such as dialysis rooms and isolation bays
2. Epidemiology Research Center
This center is dedicated to the study and advancement of disease research. It supports the identification of new and existing strains of infectious diseases and also plays a critical role in vaccine development and medication production.
Functions of the center include:
-
Hosting research laboratories and development units
-
Serving as a vaccine and pharmaceutical production site
-
Operating as a storage and distribution hub for international medical aid and supplies within the state
3. Quarantine and Isolation Center
This is a seven-story building designed to provide temporary housing and isolation for infected individuals during an outbreak. The facility includes multiple rooms equipped with bed spaces.
-
Can accommodate up to 800 individuals at full capacity
-
Designed to enable controlled containment and monitoring of infected patients
4. Administration and Public Relations Center
This building hosts the administrative and communications operations of the campus. It ensures effective coordination, public outreach, and information management.
Facilities include:
-
Administrative offices and management units
-
Call centers for emergency response and public engagement
-
Symposium halls, audio-visual studios, and media rooms for education, awareness, and real-time communication
